Condon B. Schnepel

Condon Braack Schnepel, one of two children of Anna Lydia (Braack) and Otto Henry William Schnepel, was born on his parent's farm near Carson, Iowa on April 28, 1923. He grew up in the Carson area and graduated from Treynor High School in Treynor, Iowa in 1941. Following school, Condon farmed with his father until he was drafted into the United States Army on February 14, 1945. During WWII, Condon was stationed at Manila in the Philippine Islands and earned the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon, the Victory Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal. He was discharged on December 11, 1946.

Condon and Elizabeth Marie Tvrdik were married on May 21, 1949 at St. Rose Church in Omaha, Nebraska. They made their home in Omaha where Condon was employed with the Metropolitan Utilities District. The marriage was blessed with their first child, Condon "Con" Edward. In 1954, the family moved to the Schnepel family farm near Carson where Condon began farming. They were again blessed with the birth of a son, Mark Steven and later, a daughter, Jane Louise. In 1977, the family moved to a farm near Henderson, Iowa.

Condon was a member of the Carson American Legion Post 556, a member of the Mills County Farm Bureau, and a 4-H leader of the Carson Commanders for five years. He and Betty enjoyed attending the Fourth Replacement Depot U.S. Army Pacific WWII reunions with his sister, Thurleen and her husband Marion. They also enjoyed traveling on tours with their good friends, Creighton and Marjorie Miller. Condon also enjoyed searching for four-leaf clovers.

Condon and Betty had been married nearly 60 years when Betty passed away at the Risen Son Christian Village in Council Bluffs, Iowa on January 7, 2009.

Condon passed away at the Alegent Health Bergan Mercy Medical Center in Omaha on February 9, 2009, at the age of 85 years, 9 months, and 11 days. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Betty Schnepel; brother-in-law, Marion Hotze; sister-in-law, Lily Matulaitis and husband Tony; and half sister-in-law, Rose Kretschmer. He is survived by his children, Con Schnepel and wife LaRhea of Treynor, IA, Mark Schnepel and wife Nancy of Carson, and Jane Ullrich and husband Steve of Savage, MN; five grandchildren; one great granddaughter; sister, Thurleen Hotze of Treynor; nieces and nephews; other relatives and many friends.
