Robert Kenneth Schoening was born on August 10, 1931 in Leavenworth, Kansas. He grew up in Loveland, Colorado and Silver City, Iowa where he graduated from the Silver City High School in 1949. Following school, Robert farmed with his parents until enlisting in the United States Navy on November 16, 1950. He served on the USS Princeton Aircraft Carrier during the Korean War.
On December 27, 1952, Robert and Donna Rae Plumer were married at St. John Lutheran Church in Mineola, Iowa. Robert returned to the USS Princeton until his discharge in 1954. Robert and Donna Rae made their home near Silver City and their marriage was blessed with three sons, Dwight LeRoy, Delwyn Keith, and Danny Robert.
In 1957, Robert began working at the Mineola State Bank. He enjoyed managing the bank and interacting with customers and friends. He and Donna Rae were active members of St. John Lutheran Church in Mineola where Robert served as secretary of the church council. He was a member of the Silver City American Legion Post 439, and served on the Silver City School Board and the Silver City Town Council. Robert was a member of the Mineola and Silver City Fire Departments, and was one of the original members of the Silver City Ambulance Service.
Robert always took great interest in his boys' activities. He served as a Cub Scout Master for two years and was involved with 4-H for 10 years; serving for several years as club leader for Ingraham Straight Shooters. He was a member of the Mills County Fair Board for many years and served as an Ambassador to Ak-Sar-Ben for two years. He loved the Mills County Fair and enjoyed participating in the "Cookout King" contest, where he took first place in 1968.
In July of 1971, he and Donna moved to their current home on the hill across from the Silver City Cemetery. Robert eventually transitioned from managing to selling insurance at the Mineola bank and at his retirement in 2005, he had worked in the banking industry for 48 years.
Robert and Donna enjoyed camping, bowling, reading and spending time with their grandchildren. He loved woodworking, making toys for his grandchildren and frames for pictures. Robert enjoyed working in the yard with his tractor and loved to use his snow blower in the winter, helping clear sidewalks and driveways for neighbors in Silver City. He also enjoyed being a member of the Keg Creek Antique Tractor Club.
Robert and Donna Rae were married 57 years, when Robert passed away at their home on March 19, 2010, at the age of 78 years, 7 months, and 9 days. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clyde and Willa Marie (Trout) Schoening and brother-in-law, Elwood Plumer.
Robert is survived by his wife Donna Rae Schoening of Silver City; sons, Dwight Schoening and wife Sandy of Glenwood, IA, Delwyn Schoening and wife Diana of Fallon, NV, and Danny Schoening and wife Diane of Allen, TX; eight grandchildren; six great grandchildren; brother Bruce Schoening and wife Linda of Tampa, FL; other relatives and many friends.
Memorials suggested to Silver City Public Library or Silver City Fire Department.
Interment with Military Honors in the Silver City Cemetery.
