Janis Lee Dobernecker, one of six children of James McConeghey and Sophia (Gertsma) McConeghey, was born on April 2, 1929 in Monroe, Iowa. Her family later moved to Oakland, Iowa where she attended school and graduated from Oakland High School in 1946. She continued her education by attending Commercial Extension Business School in Omaha, Nebraska.
Janis and Kenneth Gordon Dobernecker were married on July 23, 1948 in Shenandoah, Iowa. They made their home in Oakland and their marriage was blessed with four children, Gretchen, Rebecca, Jon, and Dawn. Kenny purchased the Oakland Hatchery with Janis helping him for several years. They also owned and operated three different restaurants in Oakland, and Janis always found enjoyment in visiting with their customers. Janis could always be found working. She later managed the Casey's General Store in Oakland, and then was head of housekeeping at the Oakland Manor. After leaving the Manor, Janis assisted with two different pre-schools before finally retiring.
Janis was a member of the Oakland United Methodist Church and Eastern Star. She always enjoyed spending time with her family.
Due to declining health, Janis moved to the Oakland Manor in January 2005. Later in February 2008, Kenny moved to join Janis at the Oakland Manor where they shared a room.
Janis and Kenny were married nearly 60 years when Kenny passed away on May 16, 2008, at the Manor. Janis continued to live at the Manor where she passed away on September 27, 2010, at the age of 81 years, 5 months, and 25 days.
Janis was preceded in death by her parents; husband Kenneth; great grandson Kobe Moore; son-in-law James Carrick; brothers, James McConeghey and wife Lois, Kenneth McConeghey, and Earl McConeghey and wife Loretta; sister Jean Frank and husband Gerald; and brother-in-law Dewey Shellberg.
Janis is survived by daughters, Gretchen Connell, Rebecca Carrick, and Dawn Turner and husband Dr. Kelly Turner, all of Oakland; son Jon Dobernecker and wife Susan of Carson, IA; nine grandchildren; seventeen great grandchildren; one great great granddaughter; sister Nadine Edie of Everton, MO; sister-in-law Gloria Shellberg of Oakland; other relatives and friends.
A memorial fund has been established.
Interment in Oaklawn Cemetery.
