Hope Beattie
November 17, 2010

Hope Ann Beattie, one of three children of Kathryn Beatrice (Finnegan) Hea and Marshall James Hea, Sr. was born in Forest City, Iowa on March 24, 1924. Hope grew up in Mason City, Iowa and graduated from Holy Family High School in 1942. She then attended the University of Iowa where she earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Physical Education. After graduation, Hope worked as an editor for a national Saddle Horse Magazine and as a professional horse trainer. She was the first female steward and the third female Judge in the American Horse Show Association. She rode the only horse to ever beat Jessie Owens at the 100-yard dash.

Hope eventually moved to Hamburg, Iowa where she managed the Apple Mountain Stud Farm, which at that time, was the largest stud farm outside of Kentucky. There she met James Chantry Beattie and on December 10, 1950, they were married in Mason City, Iowa. The couple made their home on a farm just east of Malvern, Iowa, where Hope taught at the Malvern Junior High School. The couple was blessed with three boys, Robert Henry, Stephen Hea, and Brian Forrest. Hope enjoyed spending time with her boys and continued to train horses. She founded the Mills County 4-H Horse Project and remained an active leader with the group for many years.

Hope and James had been married 29 years when James died on July 20, 1979. Hope and the boys remained in Malvern and Hope continued to work with horses and teach. Following her retirement, she continued to substitute teach and became an advocate for adult literacy, volunteering her time as a tutor with students of all ages.

Hope passed away at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital in Red Oak, Iowa on November 17, 2010, at the age of 86 years, 7 months, and 23 days. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband James; brother Marshall Hea, Jr.; and sister Kathleen Grosklaus and her husband Roman.

Hope is survived by her sons, Bob Beattie and wife Cindy of Treynor, IA; Steve Beattie and wife Diane; and Brian Beattie, all of Malvern; grandchildren, Brendan Beattie of Chicago, IL and Meagan Heath and husband Andrew of Council Bluffs, IA; other relatives and friends.

"Hope was one of those special people who had a wonderful impact on so many. She gave selflessly and was an amazing instructor. I'm so happy I was able to reconnect with her last year - she was still dispensing terrific advice on horse training! Hope had a lot of class and she will be greatly missed. "

Martye Concerned Neighbor wrote on Nov 18, 2010:

"To All Saddened by This Loss, I wanted to express my deepest sympathy and concern for you and also share with you the wonderful hope for our dead loved ones. As you grieve Hopeā??s death, please reflect on the hope in question, which comes from our Heavenly Creator, Jehovah God. By means of His word the Bible, He allows us to understand how Heā??ll eliminate death for good one day and bring our dead loved one back to life. This is evident in Scripture like (Isaiah 25: 8), (John 5: 28), (1 Corinthians 15:26), (Revelation 21:3 and 4), which can comfort you in this time of sorrow. Godā??s promises are guaranteed because He cannot lie (Titus 1: 2). Moreover John chapter 11 verses 11-14, 39, 43, and 44 attests that Jesus, whom Jehovah appoints to bring the dead back to life, can certainly do it since he demonstrated that when he resurrected Lazarus and several others when he was on earth. So, as you await Hopeā??s resurrection, please heed Jesusā?? counsel in John 17 verse 3 and take steps to gain accurate knowledge of Jehovah and Jesus by studying the Bible with the Witnesses. In fact, in John 5 verse 39, Jesus explains that such study is imperative for anyone, who wishes to have everlasting life one day here on earth, which will be become a paradise where you can be re-united with Hope again in a world free of all the problems we know today such as VIOLENCE, WAR, SICKNESS, OLD AGE, even DEATH etcā?¦as indicated in the following Scriptures: (Psalms 37: 9-11 and 29), (Psalms 46: 8 and 9), (Isaiah 33:24), (Job: 33:25), (Matthew 5:5). May you find comfort in the cited Scriptures! "

We worked together for many years at the school and she was always the one person who brightened all of our day. I never will forget when she brought her pet bull snake to school and it got loose!!! What excitement that caused for several days until it was found. Please know that are thoughts and prayers are with you all at this time. "
