Dorothy Wicker

Dorothy Wicker, one of six children of Nettie (Williams) Mings and Joseph William Mings, was born on April 9, 1921 in Laclede County, Missouri. When she was young, her family moved to Southwest Iowa, where Dorothy attended country school.

Dorothy and William Ray Wicker were married on February 14, 1938 in Rockport, Missouri. Their marriage was blessed with five children, Norvian, Marilyn, Kenneth, Patrick, and David.

They made their first home in Red Oak, Iowa and later moved to Griswold, Iowa, where they lived for 19 years. They then moved to a farm near Elliott, Iowa, where they lived for 17 years.

Dorothy and Ray were married 46 years when Ray passed away on October 27, 1984. For a few years, Dorothy remained on the farm, before making her home in Elliott. She eventually moved to live in Missouri, and in 2004 moved to Glenwood, Iowa.

Dorothy loved the farm and raising her family. She enjoyed knitting, playing cards, playing pool, and fishing.

Dorothy passed away on February 16, 2011, at the Hospice with Heart House in Glenwood, at the age of 89 years, 10 months, and 7 days.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; husband Ray Wicker; son Norvian Wicker; brothers, Alvie Mings; George Mings and wife Ora, and Tilly Mings and wife Loretta; and brother-in-law Harvey O'Brien.

Dorothy is survived by her children, Marilyn Fender and husband Larry of Pacific Junction, IA, Kenneth Wicker and wife Sally of Canadian, TX, Patrick Wicker and wife Wanda of Callao, MO, and David Wicker of Omaha, NE; sister Velma O'Brien of Grand Island, NE; brother Duane "Pete" Mings and wife Fran of Higgins, TX; sister-in-law Eldean Mings of Englewood, KS; 20 grandchildren; many great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; other relatives and friends.

Memorials may be directed to the family.

"Marilyn, as a cousin I am saddened at your loss and my loss of your mother. Dorothy has been a childhood family member in our home (Your Great Uncle Francis and Great Aunt Julia), Christmas cards, visits recently in Onawa, IA where I was visiting my brother Kenny & Irene Mings that attended the service last week for your Mom.
