Shirley J. Wilber

Shirley Jean Wilber, one of four children of Stena (Thompson) and Hans Christian Peterson, was born on August 11, 1924 in Council Bluffs, Iowa. She grew up in the Carson, Iowa area and was salutatorian of the graduating class in 1941 from Carson High School. Shirley worked at the Motor Vehicle License Department in Council Bluffs. In 1966, she worked at Ballers Ford in Oakland, Iowa until 1972. Shirley worked for Wyman Ford in Griswold for 21 years and retired in 1993. She and her husband, Dudley, owned and operated D and S Trading Post until 1999.

Shirley and Dudley Robert Wilber were married on December 6, 1942 in Omaha, Nebraska. Shirley and Dud were high school sweethearts, and she devotedly followed him across the country during his military service in World War II. Their marriage was blessed with two children, Diana and Bob.

Shirley was a member of the Community of Christ Church and a volunteer at the Community of Christ's Service Center. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. Shirley received numerous awards for performance superiority from the Ford Motor Company. Shirley enjoyed reading, knitting, and spending time with her family and friends.

Shirley and Dudley were married 69 years when Shirley passed away on March 4, 2012 at Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs, at the age of 87 years, 6 months, and 22 days. She was preceded in death by her parents; and brothers, Maynard Peterson and Kenneth Peterson.

Shirley is survived by her loving husband Dudley Wilber of Carson; daughter Diana Prigge and husband John of Des Moines, IA; son Bob Wilber and wife Colleen of Macedonia, IA; five grandchildren, Dave Shidler and wife Jill, Matt Wilber and wife Lisa, Collette Kono and husband Dana, Tara Wang and husband Ed, and Mark Prigge and wife Tina; twelve great grandchildren; sister Jackie Fox and husband Jack of Carson; sisters-in-law, Virginia Knudsen, and Gloria Peterson, both of Council Bluffs; other relatives; and many friends.

A memorial fund has been established.
