Maynard L. Bartels, 86, of Maquoketa, Iowa, died on Saturday morning, March 24, 2012, at his home in Maquoketa, Iowa.
A celebration of his life will be held at 11 A.M., Wednesday, March 28, 2012, from the First Lutheran Church in Maquoketa. Visitation will be held prior to the service from 9:30 A.M. to 11 A.M. on Wednesday, March 28, 2012 at the First Lutheran Church in Maquoketa. Burial will be at the Mount Hope Cemetery, Maquoketa, Iowa. The Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa is caring for the family.
Maynard L. Bartels was born on June 9, 1925 in Delaware, Iowa, to William and Mary (Dirks) Bartels. He grew up in Hopkinton and graduated from Hopkinton High School in 1942. He married Helen Marie Stender Sanger on December 10, 1977 in Maquoketa, Iowa.
Maynard first worked for Lutheran Brotherhood as an insurance salesman for over 20 years. The majority of that time was spent living in Anamosa, moving to Maquoketa in 1977. In 1985, he owned and operated Bartels Floor Covering in Maquoketa for five years. For the past 22 years he had worked for Breitbach Floor Covering in Maquoketa.
Maynard was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Maquoketa and prior to that he was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Anamosa.
Maynard loved camping, dancing, gardening and traveling. He also enjoyed fixing and refurbishing cars and campers. He especially enjoyed attending his great-grandchildren's sporting events.
Maynard is survived by his wife, Helen Bartels of Maquoketa, IA; his children, Bonnie Ireland of Waverly, TN, Nancy (Joe) Bolduc of Houston, TX, and Gayla (Don) Ohde of Cedar Rapids, IA; step-children, Kenny Sanger of Maquoketa, IA, Donnie (Pam) Sanger of Port Orchard, WA, Jim Sanger, Sr. of Davenport, IA, Gary (Brenda) Sanger of Maquoketa, IA, and Dennis Sanger of Maquoketa, IA; 6 grandchildren, Sean, Kelley, Amy, Alex, Jacob, and Jackie; 4 great-grandchildren, Maeve, Nicky, Casey and Brenden; 5 step-grandchildren, including Shelley; 10 step-great-grandchildren, including Storm and Lexie; a brother, Dean (Ellie) Bartels of Freeport, IL; and sisters, Inez Tucker of Hopkinton, IA, Delores (Bob) Mohr of Hopkinton, IA, and Phyllis Fulwider of MN. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Don, and a sister, Leona Leytem.
In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, memorials may be made to First Lutheran Church or the family.
