In loving memory of

Dorothy Juanita Slaughter
February 15, 1916 - September 25, 2012

Dorothy Juanita Slaughter, one of ten children of Frank Allen and Grace Mae (Weaver) Fichter, was born on a farm in Mills County, Iowa on February 15, 1916. Her family lived on the farm until 1926, when they moved to a farm west of Oakland, Iowa. Dorothy attended school in Carson, Iowa until the 10th grade, when her family moved to a farm east of Treynor, Iowa. Dorothy graduated from the Treynor High School in 1934. Following graduation, Dorothy worked as the manager of the lunch counter at the Woolworth's Store in Council Bluffs, Iowa until 1947.

Dorothy and Harold Fredrick Slaughter were married on August 30, 1947 in Council Bluffs, Iowa. The couple moved to Tacoma, Washington where Harold was stationed in the Army. They made their home wherever Harold assigned, and lived in North Carolina, overseas in France, and Rantoul, Illinois where he was honorably discharged. Their marriage was blessed with son Harold Frank. Dorothy's family grew to include Harold's children, Larry and Ann Marie. Following the military service, Harold moved his family to Turkey where he took a civilian job. In 1967, they returned to Iowa to live in Council Bluffs and then moved to Carson in 1977.

Dorothy was a member of the Carson Presbyterian Church. Her love of collecting elephant figurines through the years grew to over 200, with each bringing a fond memory or two. Dorothy also enjoyed and loved baking and decorating cakes. She shared her enjoyment by teaching cake-decorating classes in her home while living in North Carolina, France and Turkey. After moving to Council Bluffs, she continued her cake decorating at Alder's Bakery in Omaha, Nebraska until retirement in 1981.

Dorothy and Harold were married 39 years when Harold died on February 16, 1986. Dorothy continued to make her home in Carson. In January 2006, she became a resident at the Oakland Manor.

Dorothy passed away at the Manor on September 25, 2012 at the age of 96 years, 7 months, and 10 days. "Aunt Dodi, you will be missed. Your Obituary didn't say you lived in Dunning, NE. back when Hal was about 3-4. You and Uncle Harold ran the "Down Town Cafe" and you lived in a small room in the back. What a cook. You made Norval and my wedding cake out on Mom and Dad's ranch and were very nervous about getting it safely to Brewster for the wedding. What a gal you were - always so caring and always had a smile. You'll be missed!!"

" You will be greatly missed, Aunt Dodie! Aunt Dodie was the first person that got to hold me when I was a baby! I will cherish all the memories we had over the years... all the picnics & family gatherings! You brought us such joy! I will miss your smile everytime mom & I came to visit you at Oakland Manor! Thank you to Oakland Manor (and her room-mate/friend Evelyn) for taking such good & wonderful care of our Aunt Dodie! Save me a good seat in heaven! Like concerts, I like the first row! I love you Aunt Dodie! "

"Dear Aunt Dodie, I love you so much and miss you. You were always there for me as I grew up and treated me as a very special niece. You "adopted" my kids as your grandkids and loved them so. Our whole family will cherish the memories we have of you. Thank you for sharing your life with us. Give Mom, Dad, & Cookie a hug from us."

"Dorothy lived down the alley from us in Carson when our son was young. She held a Halloween party for all the kids on the block, complete with a weenie roast and smores. She always loved to walk by and visit. Heaven will be glad to get an angel like her. Our sympathy, "

"To the Family of Dorothy, I have lots of memories of Dorothy, esp all the times that my Grandma Donnie and I would stop by and visit with Dorothy. Grandma Allen and Dorothy were great friends. I have also been a close, close friend of Dacia's through the years and the entire family. Wonderful family, God Bless you all. Dorothy will be missed by so many. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you during this difficult time. God Bless."

"I love you, Aunt Dodie! Every time I see an elephant figurine, I think of you. How ironic that I made your famous pumpkin roll Tuesday, the day you left us to go to Heaven. "
