" This is Sister Mary Melodie's Epistle for Today My best friend, my confidante, my muse, my partner-in-crime and my "Ya-Ya" broke only one promise to me ever and that was that she'd always be here whenever I needed her. I know she didn't want to break this promise but she had no choice. Now, when I need her shoulder to cry on and need a really big hug, she is unable to 'be here' for me. Perhaps she and I didn't look at the 'whole picture' at the time and forgot to take into consideration that one of us would ultimately not be able to 'be here' for the other and would be 'THERE' instead. Every part of my being screams that I want her here, just as you all do, but we have no say. Am I being selfish: you bet I am! We never spoke on the phone that we didn't say "I love you" to each other and we never left each other without a hug and a kiss. She 'adopted' my Mother as her own and they enjoyed a genuine love for each other, so, in a way, I was blessed with another sister. Now, I have to say goodbye to her and it feels like more than I can bear. I know I should be grateful for the years we had together, but I can't see that right now. I am hurting so bad and the irony of it all is that SHE would be the one I'd go to for comfort.I have truly never felt pain like this in my life. We often told Tom and Mike, that together, we were going to make one hell of an older woman. I'd push her around in her wheel chair since she had bad feet and she'd tell me where to turn because I had bad eyes. There were other parts of each other's anatomy's we were going to select from, but some things are best left between the four of us! Ha! I guess I can laugh a little, but it's gonna take a long, long time. Among my cherished titles are : daughter, sister, mother and wife, but rounding out her favorite fun girlfriends and make our own 'ya-ya' club the year the movie came out. In a way, we were all so different on the outside and came from various walks of life, but we enjoyed an inner spirit and value system and made a real connection right from the beginning. Sometimes we let the Yo-Yo's" come along. We shared, (bragged) news of our 'Yahoo's" (children) and "Yitzel's" (grandchildren). We went on vacations, shopping trips, monthly dinners and regular events in our homes and no topic was off limits. We laughed so hard that we always went home with our cheeks and throats sore from laughter. We supported each other through the sad times too, including the loss of our own parents, our health concerns, the stress and joys of elections, (I have fired Mike a couple of times!), building and remodeling homes, building family businesses and farms. We went to Chicago whenever one of our children married and the only rule was that only the other Ya-Ya's could pick out your dress and you had no say in the matter. We lived by our shopping creed" You can dress it up, you can dress it down; you can keep it in your closet forever!. We even got Mary to wear black to her son's wedding and she looked 'mah-vul-ousss!' The Ya-Ya's and Yo-Yo's will go on and keep Kandy in our hearts. Diane & Merle, Sue & Chuck, Mary & Kenny, Rena & Todd, Mary Joy & DeWayne, Tom & I, Miike and Marlene share a rare friendship and love and our bond remain forever! May all of you reading this enjoy such a wonderful relationship with good friends and tell them you love them every day. Kandy, I love you! "
