Bernadette Margaret Brennan was born March 22, 1918, in Ruthven, Iowa, the daughter of James and Mary (Fleming) Brennan. She was a 1936 graduate of St. Mary's Academy in Emmetsburg. Following her education, she began working at St. Joseph's Hospital in Sioux City, IA.
On September 11, 1946, Bernadette was united in marriage to Warren Kliegl at Assumption Catholic Church in Emmetsburg. To this union eight children were born. After raising her children, she began working at the Emmetsburg Care Center as a Certified Nurse Aid. She retired in 1991 after over 31 years of service.
Bernadette was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church and Catholic Daughters of the Americas.
Bernadette enjoyed Saturday lunches and Sunday morning breakfasts following church; along with proof of attendance bulletin checks. She was kept up to date weekly on what was going on with all in the family. She loved baking fresh bread and chocolate chip cookies and watching the family fight over the last home-made roll. Her quick wit and sense of humor will leave us with many fond & everlasting memories.
On Friday, October 13, 2006, Bernadette Kliegl passed away at the Emmetsburg Care Center.
Left to cherish her memory are her daughter: Bernadette Joyce and husband, Larry of Emmetsburg; six sons: Jim and wife, Chris of Coralville, IA, Pat and wife Kathy of Jefferson, IA, Terry and wife, Jeannie of Gilbert, AZ, Mike of Des Moines, Frank and wife, Donna of Emmetsburg, and Joe of Emmetsburg; one brother, Vince Brennan of Emmetsburg; one sister, Loretta Donovan of Estherville; fifteen grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

"I was just finishing up my Christmas cards the other day and it seemed very empty when I came to Bern's name in my address book. I was very fortunate to have Bern as my Godmother and Aunt. Her sense of humor was heartwarmingly unique (we tried to out do each other with the most irreverant St. Pat's card). She was definitely one of the beacons in my life as I am sure she was to many others who grew up in Eburg. God bless Bern!"
