Bertha Mix

Bertha L. Mix was born on March 29, 1924, in Springfield Township, Cottonwood County, Minnesota to the late Herman and Josie (Sellman) Lamaack. She was baptized into the Christian Faith at a young age and later confirmed. Bertha received her education at the Red, White and Blue school house in rural Cottonwood County. On February 17, 1941, Bertha was united in marriage to Lester Westerman at Bertha's home. After marriage, they farmed south of Windom until 1950 when they moved to a farm in the Storden-Jeffers area. Lester passed away on March 21, 1972. After Lester's death, Bertha continued to live on the farm until her marriage to Clarence Gerdes in July of 1975 in Worthington. Clarence passed away in 1977. Bertha remained in Worthington for a short time before moving to Windom where she was united in marriage to Lloyd Mix in the early 1980's. Lloyd passed away in March of 1984. Later in life, Bertha enjoyed the companionship of Harold Rossow for many years until his death. This past Monday, Bertha became suddenly ill and was taken to the Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota where she passed away on Tuesday, February 19, 2013, at the age of 88 years. time member of the American Lutheran Church in Windom. She also belonged to the birthday club and neighborhood extension club. Bertha will be remembered for how she enjoyed life to the fullest, her enjoyment of visiting Idaho, her giving of time to others, crocheting pot holders, afghans for her grandchildren and baby blankets for each of her great-grandchildren, her time spent visiting with friends at McDonald's, Hardee's and the Senior Center and most of all, her time spent with family. Bertha is survived by her three children, Floyd Westerman (Judy) of Jeffers; Jim Westerman (Mary) of Storden; Karen Gempler (Steve) of Meridian, ID; daughter-in-law, Cheryl Westerman of Jeffers; 8 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents , husbands, Lester Westerman, Clarence Gerdes and Lloyd Mix; one son, Ed Westerman; two brothers, Raymond and Elmer Lamaack; three sisters, Lillian Schuknecht, Glennie Rupp and Grace Stoever.
