John Austin Hoopes

Madison - Professor John Austin Hoopes passed away after a short illness on March 1, 2013. John was born in Berkeley, California on March 29, 1936. He received his BS from University of California, Berkeley, where he was a member and president of the Acascia Fraternity, and studied under many excellent professors such as Albert Einstein's son. He received his PhD from MIT in 1964 where he worked with Professor Donald Harleman. He served as a First Lieutenant in the US Army Reserves from 1960-1964. He and his family moved to Madison, WI in 1964 where he became a Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Wisconsin from 1964-2013. There he excelled in mentoring hundreds of graduate and undergraduate students from around the world and in publishing many influential articles related to Hydraulics Engineering. In Madison, he was a Boy Scout Leader for Shorewood Hills Boy Scouts; an active member in Black Hawk Church. An active member of ASCE, and he worked with various Christian organizations such as InterVarsity and the International Ministry to Chinese students. by his ex wife, Janet Holden Hoopes, his daughter, Elizabeth Jane Barber, son-in-law, Jack Barber, two sons, Wesley John Hoopes and Thomas Holden Hoopes and daughter-in law Joan Mary Hoopes, as well as by grandchildren John Z. Hoopes, William David Hoopes, Daniel Isaac Hoopes, and grand-daughters Genevieve Mary Hoopes, and Sarah Kathryn Hoopes, and by his sister-in-law Kathryn Holden. He was a strong pillar for the UW Engineering Department, for his family and his church, and he will be deeply missed. Services will be held at Cress Funeral Home, 3610 Speedway Rd. Madison, WI, on Friday, March 8, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Forest Hill Cemetery. A visitation will be held at CRESS FUNERAL HOME, 3610 Speedway Road, Madison, on Thursday, March 7, 2013 from 5:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. and again on Friday from 10:00 a.m. until time of service.
