Don "Hoot" Leroy Gibson

Mr. Don " Hoot " Leroy Gibson, 85, of Burlington died at 3:02 p.m. Friday, March 29, 2013, at Great River Hospice House in West Burlington. Born October 14, 1927 in rural Mediapolis, he was the son of Orville Leroy and Ethel Vivian Ping Gibson. On March 3, 1951 he married June Lois Lutz in Burlington. She preceded him in death on May 6, 1986. On January 24, 1987 he married Cheryl Sue Varvel Hatfield in Burlington. Mr. Gibson was a graduate of Huron Consolidated High School. He was a Navy veteran serving from 1945 until 1948 on the submarine tenders the USS Fulton and the USS Nereus. He was a welder for many years working for J.I.Case Company, General Electric, Caterpillar, and Modern Welding. He enjoyed bowling, camping, and fishing, along with pheasant, duck, and mushroom hunting. Survivors include his wife, Cheryl Gibson of Burlington; one son, Denny (Bonnie) Gibson of Burlington; three daughters, Denise (Gary) Knouse, Diana Lynn (John) Jay and Debra Lee (Bill) Patten all of Burlington; three step daughters, Angela (Steve) Burch of Gilbert, Arizona, Pamela (Brian) Goble of Burlington and Sharon (James) Lewis of Burlington; eighteen grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildr...[more]

and one brother, James Keith Gibson of Aurora, Illinois. He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife June and one brother Ralph Kenneth Gibson. Friends may call from 4 until 8 p.m. Monday, April 1st, at Lunning Chapel where the family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. The funeral service for Mr. Gibson will be 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 2nd, at Lunning Chapel with the Rev. Randy Langner officiating. Interment with Military Rites by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. A memorial has been established for the VA Hospital in Iowa City.
