She then created a program called The Living White Schoolhouse Classes which were an abbreviated 1884 school day that would include arithmetic at the blackboard and using McGuffey readers and Webster spellers. She was a key lead volunteer teacher in this program for 35 years. Over 20,000 4th grade students attended from schools in and around the Brown Deer area. Dorothy's awards included Volunteer in Education Award - American Association of University Women, Outstanding Citizen of the Year - Brown Deer Chamber of Commerce, Citizen of the Year Award - Village of Brown Deer, Distinguished Alumni Award - Northland College and many more. She wrote many publications including Brown Deer Then and Now - Commemorating Wisconsin's Sesquicentennial, the Brown Deer Almanac and the Little White School House brochure. A great patron of the arts, she was a long time season ticket holder of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra and Milwaukee Repertory Theatre in addition to being a member of the Museum of Wisconsin Art in West Bend and Milwaukee Art Museum. She was also an active member and participant in Brown Deer Senior Citizens, American Association of University Women, Friends of the Library - Village of Brown Deer, and the Brown Deer Historical Society.
