Calvin Eugene Clay

Mr. Calvin Eugene "Snook" Clay Sr., 71, of Burlington died at 4:39 p.m. Monday, December 23, 2013 at Great River Hospice House in West Burlington. Born September 22, 1942 in Rock Island, Illinois, he was the son of Allen and Allene Perkins Clay. He married Mary Conn and Mary Ballew and later divorced. On January 26, 1990, he married Janice (O'Neal) Waters in Burlington. Mr. Clay worked in hydraulics at J.I. Case Co., retiring in 2002. He was of the Baptist faith. Mr. Clay was a member of U.A.W. #807, was passionate about his yard work and was well known as the man who waved at passersby on Division St. He enjoyed his guitar, fishing, and shooting pool. He was a generous and lovable person who would give you the shirt off his back. Survivors include his wife, Janice Clay of Burlington; one son, Calvin (Adrienne) Clay Jr. of Des Moines; three daughters, Angela Brewer of Rock Island, Illinois, Mercedes Clay of Davenport and Christine Johnson of Virginia Beach, Virginia; one step son, DaNeil (Dawn) Waters of Galesburg, Illinois; step daughter, Dara Waters of Iowa City; 17 grandchildren, Jadin and Quinton Clay, James Jr. and Shavonne Brewer, William and Tia Coleman, Marquis, A...[more]

l, Armando and Armanyi Hopson, Regan, DaNeil Jr. and Tiarra Waters, Quintin and Marcus Turner, Simon Waters-Counts and Rachel Waters; seven great-grandchildren; three brothers, Ronald Clay Sr., Wayland Clay Sr. and Harold Clay all of Davenport and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister Sonya and two brothers, Allen Jr. and Arnold. The funeral service for Mr. Clay will be 2 p.m. Monday, December 30th, at Lunning Chapel with Elder Alice Faye O'Neal officiating and Mr. Wendell B. O'Neal to provide the eulogy. Interment will be in Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the time of service on Monday. A memorial has been established.
