A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 a.m., Monday, October 5, 2015 at Holy Family Catholic Church in Emmetsburg. Burial is in St. John's Cemetery, Emmetsburg. The family will greet friends from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. There will be a CDA Rosary at 4:00 p.m. and a parish vigil service at 6:30 p.m. Josephine Ann Girard, daughter of Joseph Andrew and Ellen B. (Miller) Joyce, was born November 9, 1933 in Emmetsburg, Iowa. She attended country school and was a graduate of Emmetsburg High School. On June 11, 1953, Josephine married Gary Girard in Emmetsburg, IA, and to this union, four children were born. Jo and Gary ran Ted's Super Value in Emmetsburg for a number of years where many patrons enjoyed shopping and seeing the bears. Jo sold insurance for a number of years before running the Family Crisis Center for Emmetsburg and the surrounding communities. Jo was an active volunteer for many church and community organizations. She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church and Catholic Daughter's of the Americas. Jo was an avid volunteer and supporter of the Emmetsburg St. Patrick's Association since its inception. In addition to volunteering, Jo enjoyed coffee with friends, making popcorn balls for her family, and more than anything, she treasured the time she spent with her children and grandchildren. On Wednesday, September 30, 2015, Josephine passed away at the Palo Alto County Hospital in Emmetsburg. Left to cherish her memory are her children: Connie McPherson and her husband, Wayne of Sturgis, SD, Michele Girard of Tucson, AZ , Tony Girard and his wife, Ann of Prosper, TX and Mike Girard of Emmetsburg; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; sister, Therese Burns and her husband, Robert of Allen Park, MI; brother-in-law, Robert Heaverlo of Cedar Rapids, IA; a nephew, Larry Joyce and his wife, Bernie and their family; dear friends, Linda Detrick & Marilyn Gappa; and many other family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; four sisters: Alice Joyce, Helen Mueller, Kathleen Heaverlo and Mary Grady; and her brother, Joseph M. "Bud" Joyce.
