Jean Mazur, 94, passed away on October 7 at the Blair House after a lengthy illness and with family at her side. Jean was born on June 5, 1921 to Charles and Marguerite Banks in Waterloo, IA. Jean spent most of her childhood in Yankton, SD, where her father was in the grocery business. Jean met Theodore (Ted) Thomas Mazur at Yankton College and they married on June 20, 1944 in Yankton. Ted preceded Jean in death on May 29, 1997. They had been married for 53 years. Jean was also predeceased by her brothers, John Banks and Charles (Chuck) Banks, and is survived by her sister Mary Ferley of Minneapolis, MN area. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Donna (Chuck) Banks of Cedar Rapids, IA. After graduation from College, Jean and Ted lived in Vermillion, SD and Boston, MA as Ted continued his medical education, culminating with a medical degree at Harvard University. They moved to several locations in the northeast as Ted continued his medical training. Jean attended nursing school at Case Western Reserve University, and following World War II, Jean and Ted settled in Iowa, living in Burlington since 1955 where Ted entered into a medical surgery practice. urlington, Jean was a devoted mother and wife to her family for the rest of her years. Jean and Ted are survived by 4 sons, Theodore Mazur, Burlington, IA, Michael (Anna) Mazur, Syracuse, NY, Philip (Margaret) Mazur, Loveland, CO and Daniel (Maria) Mazur, Round Lake Beach, IL. In addition to her children, Jean is survived by her grandchildren, Jeremiah, Marcus, Thomas, Jennifer, Kristen, Ruth Anne, and Justin as well as her great grandchildren Heather, Ryan and Ella. Jean was an excellent cook and had a love for cats and animals of all species. She had a remarkable sense of humor. She liked bridge, opera and theatrical play and was a patron of the fine arts. She enjoyed family vacations, particularly in northern Minnesota where the family spent many summers. In addition, she and her husband spent many long and pleasant winter vacations in the Bahamas. Of special note is the continual assistance provided to Jean by her son Ted Jr., who was at her side continuously over the years since Ted Sr. passed away. Cremation has been performed, and the family plans to have graveside services this summer at Dudley Cemetery in Stickney, SD where Ted is buried. Memorial contributions can be made to the Des Moines County Humane Society, 2000 N. Roosevelt Ave, PO Box 822, Burlington, IA. Cremation has been entrusted to Lunning Chapel.
