Verna Marie White

Verna Marie White, 93, of Keokuk, passed away at 9:30 p.m. on November 30, 2015, at River Hills Village in Keokuk. Verna was born in New Boston, Iowa, on November 19, 1922, the daughter of Virgil and Alice Frueh Derr. On September 18, 1950, she was united in marriage to Donald White. He survives. A lifelong resident of the Keokuk area, Verna attended the First Congregational Church of Keokuk, and later the Keokuk United Presbyterian Church. Verna loved bowling, participating in a ladies league for many years and even traveled around the country to bowl in tournaments. She was an avid fan of NASCAR, especially driver Jeff Gordon, but her favorite pastimes were spending time with her family and cooking. Verna is survived by her husband Donald of Keokuk; her sons: Johnny Lee (Carolyn) Kite of Cantril, Iowa; and William Ernest (Mary) Kite of Keokuk; her daughters: Barbara Mae Barnes of Keokuk; Kathy Jo (Charles) Cole of Slater, Iowa; and Linda Sue (Richard) Mulholland of Mt. Vernon, Iowa; her sister Virginia LeMatty; and her sister-in-law Marianna Derr of Keokuk. ns. Verna is preceded in death by her parents, her son Gary White, her brothers Ernie and Guy Derr, and her sister Mabel Leeper. A Celebration of her life will be held at 11:30 am on Friday, December 4, 2015, at DeJong-Greaves Celebration of Life Center at 917 Bondeau Street. Pastor Mike Shea will be officiating. Burial will follow at the Montrose Cemetery in Montrose, Iowa. Visitation will be held on Friday from 10 to 11:30 a.m. before the service. Memorials may be made to the Keokuk Animal Shelter.
