Brent R. Longwell, 64, of Topeka, KS, formerly of Homer, NE passed away on Monday, December 28, 2015 at Hospice House in Topeka, KS. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Saturday, January 2, 2015 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Homer, NE with Vicar David Hawkins officiating, with visitation beginning one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in Omaha Valley Cemetery in rural Homer. Visitation with the family present will begin at 5:00 P.M., with a prayer service at 7:00 P.M. on Friday, January 1, 2015 at the Mohr Funeral Home in South Sioux City, NE. Visitation with the family will be held from 1:30 P.M. to 4:00 P.M. on Saturday, January 16, 2015 at Penwell Gabel Family Center, 1940 NW Central Avenue, Topeka, KS. All are encouraged to wear red to his services, per Brent's request. Brent was born on January 15, 1951 in Sioux City, IA, the son of Raymond and Lois (Pigg) Longwell. He grew up in Homer, NE and graduated from Homer High School in 1969. He attended the University of Nebraska at Lincoln where he played football for the Huskers from 1969 to 1973, and earned his Bachelor's Degree in Education. p for the Green Bay Packers, then played for the World Football League's Memphis Southman team. He taught for 10 years before starting his career in Environmental Services. He served as Director of Environmental Services at Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka, KS for the past 28 years and most recently was employed at St. Francis Hospital in Topeka, KS. He also continued teaching Drivers Education for the Topeka Driving School up until health issues forced his retirement. He was a sports enthusiast and enjoyed playing all sports including baseball, softball and golf. Survivors include his mother, Lois Longwell of South Sioux City, NE; sisters, Sheila Olson of Macon, MO, Marlys (Tom) Dworak of Ord, NE and Lynnelle (Ken) Conley of South Sioux City, NE; seven nieces and nephews, George and Eric Olson, Jessica Dworak, Dawn Bodyfield, Ty Dworak, Katie and Patrick Conley; several great-nieces and nephews; and special friend, Jindi Zhao. Brent was preceded in death by his father, Raymond Longwell; and brother-in-law, George Olson. Memorials may be directed to the Stormont Vail Foundation and Homer Community Educational Foundation.
