Cletus M. Salz

A funeral Mass for Cletus Salz, 89, of Algona will be held Saturday at 10:30 AM at St. Cecelia Catholic Church in Algona. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 PM on Friday at Oakcrest Funeral Services of Algona with a Rosary beginning at 4 PM and a Scripture Prayer Service beginning at 7 PM. Cletus Michael Salz was born April 10, 1926 in Whittemore, son of Charles and Christina (Kollasch) Salz. He grew up on a farm near Whittemore graduating from Presentation Academy in 1943. After high school, he left Kossuth County for the first time to attend spring training in Florida with the Brooklyn Dodgers. Due to the war at that time, he returned home to help his father farm. Clete was married to Arlene C. Faber on August 29, 1950, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in St. Joe, Iowa. They farmed in the Burt area for a short time, then moved to St. Joe where they resided until 1982, when they moved to Algona. Clete worked 30 years at Snap-on Tools retiring as a supervisor in 1990. Clete loved baseball, played cards in various card clubs, enjoyed fishing and spending time with his family. Clete was a devoted member of St. Cecelia Catholic church, having served as a member of Right to Life, the adult choir, the funeral choir, was a past Knights of Columbus and he also spent many hours at the Perpetual Adoration Chapel. His favorite prayer was the Sacred Heart of Jesus and in his later years, family and friends often remember him sharing this with them. Clete was a loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather and husband. Cletus Michael Salz died Friday, January 29, 2016 at Humboldt Care Center North. He is survived by six children, David Salz (Donna) of Algona; Donald Salz (Leona) of Apex, North Carolina; Dean Salz (Jean) of Algona; Dennis Salz (Shari) of Apex, North Carolina; Dale Salz (Kathy) of Cary, North Carolina and daughter, Lori Sullivan (Mike) of Moorpark, California, as well as, 18 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Also surviving is a sister-in-law Margaret (Maggie) Faber of Algona; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Arlene on April 3, 2010; sisters, Hildegarde Salz, Rita Kjar, and twins, Mary and Minnie at birth; and two brothers, Vincent and Reinie Salz.
