A visitation for Daniel Menke Sr., 71, from Algona, will be held on Thursday, June 16, 2016 from 4 to 7 PM, at Oakcrest Funeral Services of Algona with a Scripture Prayer Service beginning at 7 PM. A graveside inurnment will be held Saturday, June 18, 2016, at 9:30 AM at St. John's Catholic Cemetery in Bancroft with military honors conducted. Daniel James Menke Sr. was born August 13, 1944, in Algona, son of Arthur and Ruth (Arndorfer) Menke. He grew up in Bancroft graduating from St. John's High School. Dan then served his country in the United States Army and Navy. In earlier years, Dan owned and operated Menke's Phillips 66 Gas Station in Algona. He then worked construction mainly for Wayne Hansen Trucking, Giese Ready Mix, and most recently until retirement for Blacktop Services. Dan loved to play cards and he was a workaholic. Daniel J. Menke died with family by his side on Wednesday, June 8, 2016, at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines following a lengthy illness. He was 71. Menke of West Bend; 7 grandchildren; and 2 great-granchildren. He is also survived by five sisters and two brothers, Joan (Dennis) Phillips of Evansdale; Judy Meyer of Kirkland, WA; Darlene (Blaine) Watkins of Bloomington, MN; Nancy Hutzell of Topeka, KS; Harriet (Pat Robbins) Hutchison of Tempe, AZ; Mike Menke of Bancroft and Steve Menke of Bancroft; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his step-father, Max Barrows; and two brothers-in-law, Ron Hutzell and Robert Meyer.
