Virgil L. Arends, 63, of Dumont, IA, passed away August 23, 2016, at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City, IA, after a hard-fought battle with cancer. He was born October 7, 1952, to Siebert and Eva (Etzen) Arends in Hampton, IA. He married Terry Bakke on June 26, 1976 at the Little Brown Church and she survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Leann (Jim) Aukes of Bristow and Jamie (Zach) Harken of Clarksville; his mother Eva Arends of Dumont; three step-grandchildren, Michelle (Sam) DeBoer of Grimes, Billy (Bailey) Aukes of Cedar Rapids and Tyler Aukes of Clarksville; brothers-in-law Calvin Bakke of Minneapolis, MN, Mike (Karen) Bakke of Ham Lake, MN, and Travis (Jamie) Winkowitsch of Dumont; sister-in-law Diane (Jerry) Hepola of Minneapolis, MN; uncle Gene Brass; aunt RoseAnn Etzen; nieces Wendy (Paul) Cronan, Sara (Scott) Jalowitz and Hannah Winkowitsch; a nephew Ben Winkowitsch; and many cousins. Virgil's grandparents, father and sister Gloria preceded him in death. Virgil's education began in Greene and his high school years were spent in Dumont, graduating in 1970. uncilman, a fifteen year member of Dumont and later Hampton-Dumont School Board, and coached girl's t-ball and little league teams for many years. He also loved listening to rock and roll music from the jukebox he restored. Virgil was very passionate about fishing whether it was floating the West Fork with his girls or deep-sea fishing off the California coast. Virgil retired last year from Terex Cranes in Waverly after 43 years of dedicated service. Virgil was a lifelong member of the Dumont Reformed Church.
