A funeral Mass for Tony Accurso, 96, of Bancroft will be on Monday at 10:30 AM at St. John's Catholic Church in Bancroft. Burial will be in St. John's Catholic Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Bancroft American Legion. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 PM on Sunday at Oakcrest Funeral Services of Bancroft. There will be a Scripture Prayer Service beginning at 6:30 PM followed by a 4th Degree Knights of Columbus Rosary. Anthony Chester Accurso was born June 6, 1920, in Mason City, one of six children of Charles and Tina (Tagliareno) Accurso. He grew up in Mason City graduating from Mason City High School. Tony proudly played on two state baseball championship teams in high school. He served in the United States Navy during World War II being stationed in Oahu, Hawaii. He was united in marriage to Lois Helen Stott on June 2, 1947 in Mason City. Tony worked as a Railroad Depot Agent-Telegrapher in Bancroft from 1947 until 1971 when the station closed. He then worked at the Burt Depot until retiring in 1981. He also worked as an insurance agent from 1954 until 1985. n the church choir and the funeral choir, and he served as the first president of both the Parish Council and the Home and School Association. He also served as secretary of the Bancroft Independent School District for 10 years, he was a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus, a member of the Bancroft American Legion, the Bancroft Chamber of Commerce, the Bancroft Community Foundation, the Bancroft Museum, and he was involved with numerous community volunteer projects throughout the years. Tony enjoyed dancing, singing, golfing, wood carving, playing cards and cribbage, watching baseball, and watching Iowa Hawkeye sports. He had a wonderful sense of humor and was proud of his Italian heritage. Tony became a resident of the Stonebridge Assisted Living in Bancroft in the fall of 2012. Tony died on Friday, September 16, 2016, at the age of 96. He is survived by four children, Linda Powers of Grayslake, IL, Katherine Accurso of Rochester, MN, William (Diane) Accurso of Arlington Heights, IL, and Barbara (Harv) Nelson of Spencer; 5 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren, Noah (Stephanie) Powers of Gurnee, IL and their children Jason and Ari, Anne (Matt) McClure of Highland Heights, OH and their children Caleb, Eli, and Hannah, Lauren (Tony) Wang of Palatine, IL and their children, Olivia, Mason, Brandon, and McKenna; Brandon (Andrea) Nelson of Reinbeck and their children Max and Cora; and Tyler Nelson of Chicago, IL; and many loving nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Lois on January 25, 1997; and three brothers and two sisters, John, Joseph, and Jack Accurso, Jennie Stephenson, and Katherine Ewy.
