Helen Ida Hanks

Helen Ida Young Hanks, 101, of New London, died Monday, October 3rd at Blair House in Burlington. She was born May 9, 1915 in Mt. Hamill, IA to Charles E. and Vera Belle Hampton Young. On March 30, 1935 she married Clarence P. Hanks in New London. He preceded her in death on June 24, 1993. She was a 1934 graduate of New London High School. Helen was a farm wife and homemaker. She enjoyed decorating for the holidays, collecting Boyds Bears, crocheting, reading, crossword puzzles, Suduko, playing cards and in her earlier years, sewing. She was a member of Eastern Star, TTT Club, Ruth Circle, The Rebekah's and pinnocle club. She was a member of New London United Methodist Church. She is survived by four daughters; Sandra Schnicker, New London; Nancy (Bill) Larkins, Burlington; Meri Hanks, Leander, TX; Jane (Steve) Martin, Ankeny; one son, Bill Hanks of Iowa City; daughter-in-law Virginia Hanks of New London; eight grandchildren; three step grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren; four step great grandchildren, and two great great grandchildren. ker. The funeral service for Helen I. Hanks will be Monday, October 10th at 2:00 PM at Elliott Chapel in New London. Pastor Kathleen Moore will officiate. Interment will be held at Burge Cemetery, rural New London. Visitation will begin at 9:00 AM with the family present to receive friends from 12:30 PM until the time of the service. A memorial has been established for New London Community Schools.
