Paul W. Stewart

Paul W. Stewart 1922-2016 Passed away away peacefully on October 15 at the age of 94 and is resting secure in the presence of his Savior and Lord. Born May 18, 1922 in Hagerstown, Indiana, he was the son of Earl R. and Naomi Stewart. Paul is survived by his loving wife Claribel (Connie) Martin Stewart, and his beloved son Steven R. and daughter Carolyn Neale (William). Son James M. Stewart predeceased him in 1977. Also surviving are six grandchildren, Stacey (Dan) Schultz, Carey Carl, Steven P. Stewart (Staci), Brian Neale, Rebecca (Noah) Hampson, and Scott Neale. Also surviving are eight great grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren. Paul graduated from Hagerstown High School. He served in the Merchant Marine during World War II. Between tours of duty overseas he met and dated Claribel (Connie) Martin, the love of his life, while attending Butler University. Paul and Connie married on June 27, 1947, and settled in Lawrence, Indiana where Paul began farming and raising registered Aberdeen Angus cattle. n county and state fairs, where they received numerous awards. During the same time, he began developing commercial and residential real estate, including Wallingwood and Lantern Hills subdivisions. In 1963, he purchased a farm in Cambridge City, Indiana, moving his family to that location and again expanding his purebred Angus cattle herd. He enjoyed participating in and winning national and international competitions, and his herd was considered one of the best in the country. At eighty years of age, he purchased a farm in Brookston, Indiana, and continued his interest in the cattle business until his late eighties. In 1972, upon moving back to Lawrence, Indiana, Paul built and operated the Sheraton Motor Inn along with his brother-in-law Ed Martin. He was a member of Lawrence Optimist Club. In the 1950's, Paul began many years of loyal service to the Republican party. He hosted fund raising events at his farm and later at the Sheraton Motor Inn. He supported and advised many local, state and national candidates throughout his lifetime. In later years, Paul and Connie spent the winters in Miami and Port Charlotte, Florida. Paul was a member of Lawrence United Methodist Church, and later at E. 91st Street Christian Church and Legacy Church. He was generous with his support of countless Christian endeavors, and will be remembered as an encourager of people in all walks of life. He enjoyed telling a good story and relating to others in a personal way, and will be remembered as a man of faith and conviction. Most of all, he was truly loved and will be greatly missed. Visitation will be from 3-7 PM on Friday, October 21, 2016, at Leppert Mortuary, Nora, 740 East 86th Street, Indianapolis, IN 46240. Services will take place at 10:30 AM on Saturday, October 22, 2016, also at Leppert Mortuary, Nora. Entombment to follow at Washington Park East Cemetery, 10612 E Washington St, Indianapolis, IN 46229. In lieu of flowers, Paul's family asks that donations be made in his memory to the donor's favorite charity.
