After retirement, Jim served one year as guidance counselor at Union and at Yorkwood, Illinois High Schools and fourteen years administering the ASVAB test to potential military recruits at the Middletown Reserve Center and National Guard Armory in Burlington. Jim belonged to Crystal Lake and Carthage Lake Clubs and served on their Boards of Directors; taught Iowa Hunter Safety for twenty-five years and helped with the New London Community School sixth grade campout and for this service he received a Volunteer Award from the Governor of Iowa; was a 32nd degree Mason and member of Kaaba Shrine Club; belonged to the Moose and Elks Lodges, American Legion, Ducks Unlimited, and Keenagers; and was a life member of the 82nd Airborne Division and the 505th Panther Associates. Mr. Chubb volunteered with Burlington Steamboat Days, SnowBull, and dragonboat races, and donated thirteen gallons of blood to the area blood bank. He was an avid Chicago Cubs fan and was overjoyed to see them win the World Series. He cheered for the Kansas City Chiefs and the Chicago Bears and Cubs. Of course, Jim was an ardent Grayhound and Iowa Hawkeye fan. A lifelong hunter and fisherman, he enjoyed spending time at Crystal Lake and Carthage Lake Club. He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant daughter Anita, and sister-in-law Bess Chubb. A loving husband, father and grandfather, Jim is survived by his wife; one daughter Julie Chubb and one son Jerry Chubb of Burlington; stepchildren DeAnna Lerud (Brandon Holmes) and Donald Lerud of Burlington; five step grandchildren (Nathan, Nick, Colton, Keira, and Keigan); one brother David Chubb (Mary Lou Kitterman); nieces Jan Chubb Parris and Valerie Bohlen (Steve); nephew Ken Chubb (Pat); lifelong friend Bobby D. Johnson; and faithful guard dog and companion Poochie. Jim enjoyed visiting with family, friends and classmates these last months, and he appreciated the doctors, nurses and caregivers who came to the house and made it possible for him to remain at home. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 p.m. Tuesday, December 27th, at Lunning Chapel followed by Masonic Rites at 7 p.m. The funeral service for Mr. Chubb will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, December 28th, at Zion United Church of Christ with the Rev. Brice Hughes officiating. The Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard will conduct Military Rites. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. There will be a luncheon and celebration of life following the committal service at 12:30 p.m. at the Carthage Lake Club. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to Shriners Hospitals.
