John E. Shiffer, 74, of Indianapolis and summertime resident of Lake Manitou, departed this life Tuesday, June 13, 2017. He was born May 2, 1943 in Joliet, IL to the late John L. and Pearl T. (Rosa) Shiffer. John was a graduate of Joliet High School and then earned his bachelors of science from North Central College in Naperville, IL. He began his lifelong teaching career at Glenbard East High School where he would meet his wife Helen. Shortly thereafter, John enrolled at Northern Illinois University where he earned his master's degree in education. Upon moving to Indianapolis in 1979, John continued teaching physical science and biology at Greenwood Community Middle School and then for 22 years at Brownsburg High School. John was a kind and gentle soul who had never met a stranger. He lived for new experiences and meaningful memories. He would carefully plan an annual summertime adventure to a distant place. He loved meeting new friends everywhere he went and established many lifelong relationships in his travels. John was a member of the Indiana State Teachers Association and the National Education Association. He was an Amway independent business owner since 1972. John is survived by his beloved wife of 47 years, Helen Shiffer; children, Ryan (Marci Louks) Shiffer and Angela (John) Ngigi; grandchildren, Pauline, Rebecca and Maria and dear cousin, JoAnn (Terry) Leonard Visitation for John will be from 4 - 7 pm on Friday, June 16th at Leppert Mortuary - Nora Chapel. Additional visitation will begin at 10:00 am on Saturday, June 17th at East 91st Street Christian Church (6049 E 91st St, Indianapolis, IN 46250), and conclude at time of services at 11:00 am.
