In 1952, the family moved to Malvern, Iowa where John worked for area farmers for 43 years, operated the corn sheller for Waller Transfer for six years and worked at Hays Farms until his retirement.
In 1987, John and Margie moved to Riverton, Iowa. They were married 53 years when Margie passed away on March 11, 1996. John moved back to Malvern in 2007.
John was a member of the Disabled Veterans of America and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He enjoyed gardening and sharing his produce. John could often be seen on a summer day on Main Street in Malvern with his truckload of watermelons and cantaloupe to sell or most often, give away. He also enjoyed catfishing and spending time with his family. He worked hard to provide for his family and was a wonderful husband, dad, grandpa, great grandpa, brother, uncle, and good friend to all who knew him.
John passed away July 7, 2017 at his home in Malvern, at the age of 92 years, 4 months, and 18 days. In addition to his beloved wife Margie, he was also preceded in death by his parents; sons, Gary Winchel, Johnnie Ray Winchel, and Chris Winchel; great grandson Derek Winchel; sisters, Betty, Ruth, and Alice; brother George; step-siblings, Charlene, Harold, Mary Ann, and Helen.
John is survived by his children, Marion Stevens and husband Jerry of Boone, IA, Judy Ritter and husband Donald of Blandon, PA, William Winchel and wife Barb of Council Bluffs, IA; daughter-in-law Phyllis Winchel of Malvern; 19 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; 20 great-great grandchildren; step brother Steve Duren of Rock Port, MO; step sisters, Shirley and Betty in Arkansas; other relatives and many friends.
