Richard Alan "Dick" Corell was born October 18, 1931 in Keota, IA. He was the son of Harold Dale and Bess (Kammer) Corell. He moved to Sigourney when he was six years old. He graduated from Sigourney High School in 1949. He matriculated to Coe College in Cedar Rapids and was conferred with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology in 1954. It was at Coe that he met his future wife. On July 12, 1953 at the First Baptist Church in Mt. Pleasant, Dick was united in marriage to JoAnn Maxwell by the Rev. Dr. James C. Marlin of the First Methodist Church in Mt. Pleasant.
Shortly after his college graduation, Dick was called to the service of his country. He entered the United States Army on August 17, 1954 at Ft. Des Moines, IA. He was stationed as a Medic with the Medical Company of the 26th Infantry Regiment in Germany. He was honorably discharged as a PFC on May 18, 1956 at Ft. Sheridan, IL.
Dick and JoAnn made their home in Cedar Rapids. For many years, Dick owned and operated Corell's Outdoor Machines Sales and Service - a small engine shop. He also worked a number of years as a salesman for Martin Brothers Restaurant Supply Co. In 1977, the couple moved to the Maxwell Family Farmstead, where Dick farmed and was a partner in Maxwell Market. He retired from farming in 1999, but was involved in the market until recently.
Mr. Corell was a member of the First United Methodist Church. He served on many boards and in many capacities for the church, with his favorite helping the church with its food operation during the Midwest Old Threshers Reunion. Dick was a very avid outdoorsman, who loved to fish and hunt. He was a member of the National Wild Turkey Federation, Ducks Unlimited, Pheasant Forever and the Southeast Iowa Skeet Club. He served as a member of the Henry County Conservation Board. While in Cedar Rapids, Dick was a Boy Scout Leader for his son's troop.
