Barry had the opportunity to join the banking industry, acting as a director for 1st National Bank of Boulder County from 1990-1995, and as a founder and Vice-Chairman of the Board and shareholder, at Flatirons Bank from 2000-2008.
Barry took an early and on-going interest in his beloved Longmont. He joined the Longmont Jaycees in 1974-1980. He was selected as Outstanding First Year Jaycee (1974 National Award), serving as a State Delegate at the National Convention. Appointed by Governors Lamm and Romer, he served on the Colorado State Housing Board from 1980-1989, acting as Vice-Chairman for the board. As a member of the Longmont Skyline Kiwanis Club 1978-present, he served as the club's Charter President. The club sponsors an annual golf tournament to benefit Longmont's Habitat for Humanities and is a major sponsor for the annual Longmont 4th of July fireworks show. He and the club were instrumental in the construction of the pavilion at Longmont's Ute Creek Golf Course. Barry recently received the Tom Brock Award, presented by the Longmont Industrial Park Board, honoring business leadership in building a better Longmont community. Barry enjoyed his many hot rod friends as a member of The Over the Hill Gang in Lake Havasu, where he proudly served as both club president and treasurer. Barry was also a member of the Longmont American Legion Post #82, Moose Lodge #1548 and the Lake Havasu Elks Lodge #2399. He served as Chairman of the Longmont Local Licensing Authority 1980-1985, a member of the Longmont Affordable Housing Task Force, Longmont Chamber of Commerce and, in faith, First Lutheran Church.
He is survived by his wife Patty of Longmont and Lake Havasu City, AZ; daughter Lisa (Dave) Jayne of Longmont; daughter and business partner, Lori Walker of Longmont; sons Tim Serlis of Lynchburg, VA; Todd (Lena) Serlis of Tracy, California; grandchildren Josh and Jensen Walker and Alexa and Madison Jayne all of Longmont; Bradley and Tom Serlis of California; brother Charles Serlis of Charleston, Oregon; sister in law Pam (Wayne) Clark of Ft. Collins, CO; nephews Bill (Jen) Clark of Greeley, CO and Brad (Mandy) Clark of Anchorage, AK; his four-legged buddy, Rosco; and a large extended family.
Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, October 13 at the Howe Mortuary Chapel, followed by lunch at Longmont's Oskar Blue Brewery OAK Room.
