John "Jack" Dobberthein, 78, of Thayer, died Wednesday, October 4, 2017 at the Afton Care Center in Afton. Celebration of Life Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, October 9, 2017 at the Powers Funeral Home in Afton. Father. Ken Halbur will officiate. Burial will be in the Murray Cemetery in Murray with full military honors being provided by William Lochery American Legion Post # 405 of Murray. Open visitation will be 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday, October 8, with family receiving friends from 4 to 6 p.m. with a prayer service at 6:00 p.m. at Powers Funeral Home in Afton. Memorials are to the family. John Henry "Jack" Dobberthein, son of Kathryn Elizabeth (Sweeney) and Oliver James Dobberthein, was born January 20, 1939 in Clive, Iowa. Jack attended Clive Community Schools. Jack served his country as a part of the United States Navy.

or McAnitch Road Construction Company. Jack was united in marriage to Donna Marie Main in Thayer, Iowa on May 23, 1998. Jack later worked for Elder Road Construction, for 15 years until his retirement in 2004.Jack was a member of the Teamster Local 234 for 47 years, he also was a member of Lakeshore Golf and Country Club.
Survivors include his wife Donna Dobberthein of Thayer, Ia.; three step-daughters, Tena (husband Duane) Smith of Woodburn, Ia., Teresa Main of Osceola and Terry Main of Grand River, Ia.; a brother Larry (wife Judy) Dobberthein of Melrose, Ia.; two sisters, Shirley Cook of Des Moines and Mary Deragaski of Canutillo, Texas; seven step-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter Jackie Sue Monroe in 2015, two brothers Thomas Dobberthein in 2015 and Joseph Dobberthein, a sister Barbara Cook and a nephew Bill Cook.
