Carol Kohl, 95 of Tipton died passed away on January 10, 2011 at Cedar Manor Nursing Home in Tipton, Ia. The funeral service is Friday January 14 at the First United Methodist Church of Tipton at 11:00 AM with visitation 1 hour prior to the service. Pastor Paul Frederiksen will officiate. Organist will be Sylvia Gould with Edwin Phelps as vocalist. There will be a luncheon at the church following the service at the cemetery. Fry Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Burial will be in Rochester Cemetery. Pallbearers will be: David Ryan, Russ Ryan, Jeff Ehresman, Don Villhauer, Roger Gritton, Rick Varney, Mark Crooks. Carol was born September 19, 1915 to Rutherford Blaine Howe and Catherine Myrtle Horn near Rochester, Iowa, one of eleven children. She attended country school before she graduated from Tipton High School in 1934. On July 24, 1937 she married William Davis Kohl in Crown Point, IN. Bill died in 1985. Carol worked in Chicago at Marshall Fields and Firemen's Fund before moving back to Tipton. Later she worked at Donahue Insurance as an agent/secretary for many years. Kohl Construction. Carol was known for her Saturday homemade bread and Sunday night chocolate cake. Their home became the hub to many family gatherings. The yard was always full of kids. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, UMW and Naomi Circle. Survivors include four children, Bill Kohl (Carolyn) Tipton, Barbara Anderson of Iowa City, Beverly Ehresman (Jim) Tipton, and Shirley Ryan (Mike) Mt. Vernon; grandchildren, Carolyn Ann Gritton, Courtenay Villhauer, Jamey Varney, Jody Crooks, Jeffrey Ehresman, David Ryan, and Russell Ryan; eighteen great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband, two infant sons Ronald and Raymond, her parents, four brothers; Vernon Howe, Clarence Howe, Marlin Howe, and Earl Howe, and six sisters; Delight Sterner, Mabel Elsome, Marion Behrens, Mildred Swider, Cathernine Phelps, and Martha Howe. Carol will be missed by the many lives she touched. A memorial has been established in Carol's name.
