Genevieve Helmers

Genevieve Agnes Helmers was born August 26, 1913, at Burt, Iowa to Frank and Nellie (Murray) Nellis. Genevieve attended schools in Burt. She was married to John Helmers on May 10, 1934, in Fairmont, Minnesota. Following their marriage, the couple lived in the Algona area, Minnesota for a short time, and then returned to live in Algona. Genevieve did not work outside of the home, and was always there for her children as they were being raised. John died on June 5, 1998. Genevieve became a resident of the Algona Manor Care Center in Algona on February 4, 2005, and died there on Tuesday, August 22, 2006, at the age of 92. Genevieve enjoyed fishing and gardening as well as mowing her lawn, enjoying the out-of-doors. She was also an avid sports fan and enjoyed watching UNI, Iowa State and Iowa football and basketball on TV. She also enjoyed watching baseball on TV, especially the Chicago Cubs. Survivors include her children, Barbara and husband Gordon Baer of Algona; Virginia and husband Robert Witham of Irvington; Maxine and husband Kenneth Holcomb of Algona and Jerald Helmers and wife Becky of Algona.
