Joseph B. Walte, 88, of Montrose, Iowa, died Sunday, March 2, 2003 at 1:00 A.M. at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington, Iowa. Joseph Walte was born on January 7, 1915 in Keokuk, Iowa. He was the son of John and Winfred Howell Walte. He married Dorothy Preston on July 11, 1937 in Reno, Nevada. He had lived in Keokuk most of his life except for several years that he spent in California during WW II. During that time he helped in the construction of the Hoover Dam. He was co-founder and co-owner of Walte & Farnum Construction Company. He later founded and owned Walte Construction Company. He built the Sisters Home at 8th & Timea which currently houses Young House. He did the concrete work for the Keokuk Police and Fire Department building and helped construct other schools in the Tri-State Area. He was a member of the Moose Club, was a past member of the Knights of Columbus, and the Keokuk Yacht Club where he was a past Commodore. He was of the Catholic faith. ol, of Sacramento, California; two daughters, Violet Miles of Hoffman Estates, Illinois and Tracy Walte of Keokuk, Iowa; eight grandchildren, Tonya and Margaret Walte, Tim Miles, Prudy Schmidth, and Lori, Bill, Joe, and Jeff Walte; several great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandson. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, John and Matthew Walte; and one sister, Marguerite Guttings. Services were Thursday, March 6, 2003 at DeJong's Funeral Home in Keokuk with Reverend Christopher David officiating. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery in Keokuk. Memorials may be made to the Keokuk Catholic Schools in his name.
