Juanita "Johnnie" Britton Gilpin, 90, of Ft. Madison passed away at 4:33 PM on Thursday, December 14, 2017 at The Madison.
She was born on June 22, 1927 in Ft. Madison to Frank and Pearl Herrmuth Britton. Johnnie attended Richardson, Grammar and Ft. Madison High School and earned a Bachelor's and Masters degree from Kirksville State Teachers College in Missouri. She did graduate work at the University of California in Riverside, L.A. State College in Los Angeles, LSU in Baton Rouge, LA and Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, AZ. She taught school at Fontano, CA; Kersey, CO and Gulf Breeze, FL. After retiring she did volunteer teaching at Christian Schools in Alabama and Germany. in the seniors group at Olive Baptist Church. In July 1994 while in Harrison, TN she contracted Lyme Disease from a tick bite. In October 1994 she returned to Ft. Madison where her health continued to deteriorate due to chronic lyme disease. Johnnie was also an avid reader.
Survivors include one brother, Meredith "Skip" Britton of Crossville, TN and numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews, including Kelly Peters of Ft. Madison who was her longtime caregiver.
The memorial service will be held on Friday, December 29, 2017 at 10:30 AM at King-Lynk Funeral Home & Crematory with Rev. Dean Graber officiating. The family will meet with friends from 10 AM until the time of the service. Burial will follow in Oakland Cemetery.
