Dolores V. King

Dolores Vandegrift King, loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 16, 2017 at Springhouse Estates in Lower Gwynedd. She was 87 years old. Dolores was born in Philadelphia, daughter of the late Norman and Elizabeth (nee Adcock) Vandegrift, and was a lifelong resident of Ambler. She was a 1948 graduate of Ambler High School. Dolores was a devoted wife and mother, and as her children grew older, she became an administrative assistant for the Upper Dublin School District. She worked at the High School and in the Administration Office for over 20 years until her retirement. Formerly of Stuart Lane in Ambler, Dolores and her husband Walt were longtime residents of Gwynedd Estates. She was happily involved in the activities of the Estates and was a familiar sight to everyone during her daily walks around the campus. Dolores and Walt traveled extensively throughout the United States, especially enjoying their trip to Alaska. She liked playing bridge, and she and Walt never missed a nightly game of cribbage. is survived by her beloved husband of 67 years, Walter S. King. She is the loving mother of Robert N. King and his wife Monica, of Ambler; Barbara K. Shatzer and her husband Christopher, of Chambersburg; and John W. King and his wife Shari, of East Norriton. Dolores treasured her grandchildren, J.R. King (Victoria), Courtney Shatzer, David Shatzer, Emily King, and her great-granddaughter, Juniper King. She was predeceased by her brother, Donald Vandegrift. Relatives and friends are invited to call on Thursday, December 21, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the Anton B. Urban Funeral Home, 1111 S. Bethlehem Pike, Ambler, PA and again on Friday, December 22, from 10:00 to 11:00 AM at the First Presbyterian Church of Ambler, 4 S. Ridge Ave. Ambler, PA, followed by a funeral service at 11:00AM with Pastor Ryan Balsan as officiant. Interment will be in Whitemarsh Memorial Park.
