Daisy Henrietta "Penny" Richtman, 92, of Keokuk, died at 10:03 PM Sunday, March 15, 2009, at her home. Mrs. Richtman and her twin brother were born July 15, 1916, in Warsaw, Illinois, the children of Henry John and Daisy Ruth Neiswanger Kraushaar. She married Rolland Hugh Richtman on November 15, 1946 in Freeport, Illinois. He preceded her in death in 1967. She was a graduate of Keokuk Senior High School and attended Wartburg College at Waverly, Iowa where she majored in journalism. For over 50 years she was a newspaper reporter, a society editor and columnist for newspapers in Norwalk, Connecticut, New Orleans, Louisiana, Dubuque, and Keokuk, Iowa. She retired from the Daily Gate City in Keokuk in the 1985. She always had pets; dogs, cats or birds. She is survived by two cats. She was a member of the Parent Teacher Association for many years and besides serving as president for two units, was president of the Keokuk Council Parent Teachers Association for five years having completed an unfilled term of a previous president. No. 40, White Shrine of Jerusalem No. 12, the National Writers Club, National Geographic Society, American Association of Retired Persons, and Trinity United Methodist Church. She is survived by a son, Rolland Henry "Rick" Richtman and his wife, Cheri, of Keokuk; seven grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1967; her daughter, Penny Reed , in 2001; two sisters; and her twin brother, Henry, June 14, 1930. Funeral services were held Thursday, March 19, 2009 at DeJong's Funeral Home with Brother Bill Hauser officiating. Burial followed at Keokuk National Cemetery in Keokuk, Iowa. A public Eastern Star Memorial Service was held. Memorials may be made to Lee County Hospice or to the George M. Verity Riverboat Museum.
