Funeral services for Mr. Garland P. Watkins, age 89, of Allons, TN will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, February 24, 2016 from the chapel of Speck Funeral Home in Livingston with burial in the Old Walnut Grove Cemetery where there will be a military service provided by the Honor Guard from the James T. Davis Memorial Post 5062 of the VFW in Livingston. The family will welcome friends on Tuesday evening from 5 until 8 p.m. Mr. Watkins passed from this life on February 22, 2016 at Overton County Health & Rehab Center in Livingston. He was born January 30, 1927 in Overton County to the late Shirley & Vera McAlpin Watkins. He joined the US Navy right after high school and was a World War II veteran. In 1956 he joined the Miami Police Dpartment, spent 22 years of service with the department, and retired as Chief of Police in 1978. After retirement, he returned to Overton County and became involved in the community. He served 2 terms as an Overton County Commissioner, was a member of the board of the Tennessee Commission on Aging & Disabilities, spent over a decade as a member of the board for the North Overton Utility District, and was a past Grand Master of the local Maso...[more]

He is survived by his wife, Mary Lee Watkins of Allons; son, Daniel Watkins & wife, Brenda of Allons; daughter, Jennifer McCloskey & husband, Joe of Davie, Florida; 3 grandchildren, Michael Watkins, Phillip Miller, & Stephanie Lee Miller; 5 great-grandchildren, Miranda and Miles Watkins, Bailey Lee and Brody Donaldson, and Callie Miller; and a brother, Shirley Watkins & wife, Vicky of Allons. Pallbearers to serve are Daniel Watkins, Ray Stover, Phillip Miller, Cole Donaldson, Michael Reyes, & Joe McCloskey. He is preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Dewey Jewell Watkins. Memorial contributions may be made to the Old Walnut Grove Cemetery by contacting American Bank & Trust.
