Lavada “Dustie” Dowd

Lavada Fern "Dustie" Dowd, 90, of Waterloo, IA, died Wednesday, March, 28, 2018 at Covenant Medical Center of natural causes. She was born Ja nuary 3, 1928, in Hazleton , IA, daughter of Louis and Ella Waters Destival. She married John Dowd in July of 1952 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Waterloo. He preceded her in death on Aug ust 23, 1968. Dustie graduated from Hazleton High School. At the age of 55, Dustie received her nurse's aide and medication certifications from Hawkeye Community College. She worked at several local businesses over the years and then worked at area nursing homes as a nurse's aide until her retirement. She was an avid sports fan, predominately basketball, because of her sons' involvement and she also cheered for the Hawkeyes and Cubs. She was an excellent bowler and enjoyed going to the casino, too. Dustie is survived by  a son, John G. Dowd of Waterloo; a daughter, Julie Dowd Legeros of Lake Forest Park, W A; four grandchildren : Elena (Shelby) Legeros, Anna (Alex) Fleet, Sam Dowd and Danielle Dowd; a great-grandson, Thomas Christopher Fleet ; a great-granddaughter expected in June; and two sisters, Janice Schoon and Judy (Daniel) Gnade, bot...[more]
