Dorothy Beaves, 85, of Dubuque, passed away peacefully at home with her family by her side on Friday, April 13, 2018.
Mass will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday, April 16, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Dubuque, where friends may greet the family 11:00 to 1:00 p.m. Very Reverend Dwayne Thoman will officiate. Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home and Cremation Service is entrusted with arrangements.
Dorothy Muriel (Zakoscielny) Beaves was born September 20, 1932 in Detroit, Michigan. She attended Highland Park General Hospital School of Nursing, graduating as an RN in 1955. She met her husband of 61 years, George W. Beaves, in nearby Traverse City while he was stationed at Empire Air Force Base in Empire, MI. They were married on October 22, 1955 at Visitation Church in Detroit, Michigan. Dorothy was very passionate about her nursing career and always viewed it not as a job, but as a vocation. She worked as an RN at Finley Hospital, Xavier Hospital, Mercy Hospital, and finally at Manor Care. After a 55 year career, she retired in 2010. ay the slots. She also enjoyed reading, playing cards with her friends and working on puzzles. She was a great cook and baker. Dorothy would bake dozens and dozens of cookies at Christmas time and give them as gifts to family and friends. Dorothy was a member of Sacred Heart Parish since moving to Dubuque in 1955.
She is survived by her sons George I. of Rockford, IL, David (Beth) of Asbury, IA, Gregory (Sara) of Houston, TX, Mark (Tracey) of The Villages, OK; and daughter Mary Kay (Dennis) Weber of Peosta, IA, as well as 14 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, brother-in-law, Peter (Margaret) Beaves, sisters-in-law Eileen Beaves and Betty Church, and many nieces and nephews.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her loving husband George, an infant daughter, her brother Joseph Church, and her sister Ann (Joe) Jackowski.
Dorothy's home for the last three years was Oak Park Place, where the staff greatly contributed to her joy & comfort, and she was most grateful for their kindness & compassion. We would like to thank Dorothy's Hospice of Dubuque care team; her nurse Tammie, social worker Jennie, aide Peggy, massage therapist Jessica, her musical therapist Suzanne, and the entire Hospice crew that helped care for Dorothy.
