best of bad situations throughout his life. A country boy will survive. In his early 20's he started selling farm equipment and owned Carroll Equipment Company in Winchester until his retirement. C.M. traveled throughout the northern US and Canada to fill orders for local farmers. He brought some of the first John Deere tractors with cabs to Franklin County. He and his wife also grew row crops and raised Angus cattle. His typical work day frequently ended well into the night hours. He never met a stranger and won the hearts of folks with his kindness, honesty and generous personality as well as storytelling ability. He retained his sense of humor and big laugh until the end of his life. C.M.'s gardening skills were unparalleled as he competed against himself each year to grow bigger tomatoes, more potatoes, corn and many other vegetables. He always planted far too much so he could share. He was a man who would give you the shirt off his back if you were his friend. No one came to his farm without leaving with some gift. C.M.'s love of travel took him and his family on numerous road trips throughout the U.S., Mexico and Canada. He was a family man who always included stops to see relatives on these trips. C.M. will be remembered for his love of the land, his generosity and his great sense of humor. His handshake and promise were something you could count on.
