Dale V. Martin

Dale V. Martin, 93, of Union, IA, went home to be with his family and friends in Heaven early on Sunday morning, May 27, 2018. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, May 29, 2018, at the Union Community Church in Union. Private family services are being held at a later date. Interment will be at Union Cemetery. Arrangements were entrusted to Anderson Funeral Homes in Conrad, IA. Memorials may be directed to the Union Community Church Youth Fund. Together with his wife of 71 years, Corinne (Haywood) Martin, they had the enjoyment of their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Dale & Corinne were often seen at school events, cheering on at sports, or having family with them at the farm and church. A 'cradle roll/birthright' member of the Bangor Friends Church, being faithful to the leading of the Lord in his life, Dale was very involved in providing faith based leadership. At Bangor, he served as teacher, trustee, treasurer and many other committees. Also served on Iowa Yearly Meeting of Friends, National Friends Committee for Legislation and Quakerdale Board. After joining the Union Community Church, Dale was active on many men's committees. A willingness to help our community grow; Dale helped in organizing the Heart of Iowa Telephone Cooperative; served on the local school board; served as a member of County extension council and the 4-H Youth Committee. Dale organized the Bangor Liberty Sharpshooters 4-H Club. He served on the local A.S.C committee for six years. Helping form and organize the Marshall County Pork producers as well as belonging to the Beef producers, where he was instrumental in defining backgrounding feedlot cattle. Iowa Soybean Association and the Iowa Corn Growers were chances to share the story of agriculture. Dale served as the Iowa Corn Promotion Board Chairperson and was selected to serve on U.S Corn Growers and the World Feed and Grain Council. On the Council, Dale had the opportunity to be an Ambassador for US Grains at several countries around the world. Conservation was a constant and never ending goal of Dale's in his farming operation. The Iowa Farm and Home Soil Conservation Award was presented to Dale in 1960 for achievement in adopting soil conservation practices. With his sons farming with him, they pioneered no till and minimum till farming, which he believed is the most effective and efficient way to achieve soil conservation. Dale was active in the Marshall County Farm Bureau and 11 years on the Marshall Farm Service board, serving as president for three years. Involvement in the Marshalltown Chamber of Commerce on the agriculture committee gave him greater understanding of the rural urban relationship which aided in his efforts on the Iowa State University Advisory Council and while he was Marshall Count Supervisor for four years. A member of the Union Kiwanis, American Legion and a Mason, Dale was always an active member in any group he was a part of. He had a passion to make a difference. Helping with the fundraising and development of the South Hardin Recreation area, Dale believed in creating new growth for the community. After graduating with the Union High School Class of 1941, Dale farmed for a short time until he enlisted in the army and served with the 82nd Airborne Division as a paratrooper in World War II. When he returned from the service, Dale returned to farming and developed his row crop production, purebred Angus cattle and Spotted swine herd. Farming, family and faith were the cornerstones to Dale's life. As his family looks back on his life, we are thankful to have had Dad/Grandpa/Great-grandpa to provide us his wisdom, leadership and passion for life.
