Donald E. Merkel

Donald Edward Merkel, died peacefully on Wednesday August 22, 2018 at his home in North Wales, at the age of 71. Born in Abington, Donald was the son of the late Fred and Eleanor (Steigelmann) Merkel, Sr. Mr. Merkel was a 1965 graduate of Abington Senior High School. He served his country in the US Navy from 1968 till 1971. Don was the retired Supervisor of Transportation for the Abington School District for 35 years prior to his retirement in 2004. Donald was a boater and enjoyed summers spent on Long Beach Island. He was a talented woodworker and a Corvette enthusiast and could build or rebuild anything automotive. Donald is the beloved husband of of Kay Jeanne (nee Bossert) Merkel. Don is the devoted father of Donald J. Merkel of Schwenksville and Jeffrey A. Merkel of Horsham. He is the step father of Robert A. Helm and his wife Lori of Quakertown, Daniel J. Helm of Horsham, Deena M. Helm of Abington and John L. Helm and his wife Jennifer of Abington. He is the Grandfather of 8 and Great Grandfather of 1 grand Daughter. He is also survived by his brother Fred C. Merkel, Jr. and his wife Joan of Ambler.
