Dr. David Eugene Wheeler

David Eugene Wheeler was born to Jesse Hardin and Fay Hester-Wheeler on the sixth day of January in 1927 at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana. Young Wheeler lived and grew up in Danville, Indiana before moving to Mooresville, Indiana and San Antonio, Texas and back to Indianapolis. He attended George Washington of Indianapolis, being a captain of the ROTC, a member of the National Honor Society, and a bass with The Colonial Chorus, as well as valedictorian of his 1945 graduating class. Wheeler matriculated at Indiana University. His degrees were Bachelor of Science in Anatomy and Physiology followed by the M.D., subsequently being certified by the American Board of Radiology. Dr. Wheeler was Assistant Chief of Radiology at the West Tenth Street USVA Hospital, but his career in radiology was mostly spent at Community Hospital (East) from which he earned a plaque for 25 years of service. Wheeler married Joan Marie Carter on New Year's Eve 1950, and she worked to support him through the rest of his medical and specialty training. rcus Brandon Wheeler, and Erica Gail Williams. Dr. and Mrs. Wheeler were longtime members of Northminster Presbyterian Church. Wheeler was a born-again Christian and served as a ruling elder and Sunday school teacher at Southminster Presbyterian Church. Dr. Wheeler was a member of several organizations including SERTOMA. He made missionary trips to Guatemala, once establishing the first X-ray laboratory in the Hospital Evangelico of Chichicastenango. Dr. and Mrs. Wheeler helped many charitable groups, one of the most noticeable being the "Little Things" monthly evangelical magazine, which established in 1980 and published for more than 20 years. Mrs. Wheeler volunteered with babies at the Vivian Smith House for many years, and his granddaughters Katie and Erica were baptized at Northminster with Dr. Wheeler as Elder of Record. Dr. and Mrs. Wheeler spent their winters at their Anna Maria Island Beach hideaway on the Florida shore of the Gulf of Mexico where they attended the Longboat Key Community Church. They also spent summers at Bass Lake, Indiana and attended services in the First Presbyterian Church of Winimac, Indiana. Dr. Wheeler gave the Gideons Addresses. He was also a captain in the medical detachment of the Indiana Guard Artillery, qualifying with 45-caliber side-arm as well as in firing and directing fire of the line artillery pieces. The Wheelers have lived in a cottage at Marquette Manor since 2003, where they enjoyed spending time with friends and family, including their two great grandchildren, Colin James Vaulter and Zoe Olivia Vaulter.
