Joanne DeDecker was born April 26, 1935 to Joseph Peter and Florence Marie (Freund) Britz in Waukegan, Illinois. She passed away peacefully, surrounded by family on November 27, 2018 at Mercy Hospice in Johnston, Iowa. She attended Grade School in Moline, Illinois and graduated High School from Alleman High School in Rock Island, Illinois in 1953. In Moline, she met the love of her life, Gerald DeDecker who was just back from serving in the Air Force and was working for his brother, Jim in Moline. The two were married in Moline at Sacred Heart Catholic Church on June 21, 1958. The newlyweds moved to St. Louis, Missouri where Jerry worked as an Air Traffic Controller and Joanne was a homemaker. All four of their children were born in St. Louis. They lived in St. Louis, Oklahoma City, Des Moines, Kansas City and Washington DC before Jerry retired in 1989. She and Jerry returned to Des Moines, Iowa in retirement to be close to family and the grandchildren as family was most important to them. (Christian) Huntley and a great grandchild, Vera Huntley; her daughter, Debra Jean DeDecker of Phoenix, Arizona; her son, William DeDecker of West Des Moines, Iowa; her son, Martin and Debra (Hansen) DeDecker of Altoona, Iowa and their three children, Matthew, Megan, and Michael. She will be missed by many nieces, nephews and numerous friends from the communities where she and her husband Jerry worshiped, lived, and worked. She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Rosie; brother, Joe and husband of 60 years, Jerry. She will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, godmother and great friend by all. She loved to spend time with family and traveled with her husband Jerry to many parts of the US and Europe. She had a life-long passion for quilting and was a member of the Sacred Heart Quilting Group and the Des Moines Area Quilters Guild. She was also a member of the Catholic Daughters and Catholic Women's League. A visitation service will be held on Sunday, December 2nd from 5-7pm at Iles Westover Chapel, 6337 Hickman Road in Des Moines. Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in West Des Moines, Iowa on Monday, December 3rd at 10:30am. Interment will be at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Van Meter, Iowa on Friday, June 21, 2019 at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in her name to Mercy Hospice (foundation.mercydesmoines.org - choose "Mercy Hospice" as designation if doing online).
