Cecil S. Swanson, Sr., 83, of Des Moines, IA passed away on January 26, 2019 in Overland Park, KS. Funeral Services will be held on Friday, February 1, 2019 at 9:30 a.m. at Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church, 3900 Ashworth Rd., West Des Moines, IA 50265. Burial will follow at 11:00 a.m. at Iowa Veterans Cemetery, 34024 Veterans Memorial Dr., Adel, IA 50003 with a luncheon afterwards at the church. Visitation will be Thursday, January 31, 2019 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran. Cecil was born in Holmquist, South Dakota to Everett and Esther (Brand) Swanson. He grew up on a farm near Bristol, South Dakota. After high school, Cecil joined the Air Force where he served our country from 1954 to 1957. He married Connie (Negrete) Swanson on December 16, 1961. Cecil worked as a Systems Analyst for Job Service of Iowa for 30 years, retiring in 1997. Cecil enjoyed walking for exercise, spending time with his family, reading, and volunteering, especially for Children's Miracle Network. atching his grandchildren's sports and activities. After retirement, Cecil pursued his interest in genealogy and completed a Swedish language class after which he traveled to Sweden. Cecil attended Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church. Survivors include his wife, Connie of the home; his daughter, Elizabeth (Liz) Swanson-Hyland (Charlie Hyland) of Leawood, KS and son, Cecil Swanson, Jr., of Des Moines, IA; grandchildren, Courtney Hyland, Andrew Hyland, Clare Hyland, and Luke Hyland of Leawood, Kansas; his sister, Myra (Swanson) Schiley of Webster, South Dakota, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Alice (Swanson) McCargar, and his granddaughters, Haley and Rachel Hyland.
