Juanita H. Berry, age 94, formerly of 2025 Washington, died Friday, September 19, 2008 at 6:30 a.m. in Bickford Cottage. She was born September 3, 1914 in Durham, Missouri the daughter of John and Gertrude Hoskins Huner. On August 30, 1939 she married Harold Berry in St. Louis, Missouri. He preceded her in death in August of 1963. Juanita spent her life residing in Quincy, Illinois. She attended Madison School and Quincy High School where she graduated at age 17 as salutatorian of her class. She received a scholarship to attend Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri, but instead she decided to obtain a job and support her family during the Great Depression in the 1930's. Juanita was a trail blazer for women's progress in the Quincy business community. She became the first female manager of the 16 Block & Kuhl department stores. She later joined Gates Radio Corporation (now Harris Corp.), becoming one of the first women to work in a supervisory capacity. Juanita was then promoted to a managerial position with the Harris Corporation, where she worked for 32 years, until her retirement in 1984. nita traveled extensively with family and friends throughout the United States, Europe and the Caribbean. She also continued to be active in the Central Baptist Church, and held the office of Trustee for three years and the Pastoral Relations Council for one year. In 2007 she was honored as being a church member for 82 years. As a volunteer for the Salvation Army, Juanita co-chaired the Dress and Angel project. She also served as a volunteer for Blessing Hospital. Survivors include a daughter, Dr. Linda L. Hines and husband John of Highland Park, IL; four grandsons, Tim Hermeling and wife Sarah of Northbrook, IL, Steve Hines and wife PJ of Eden Prairie, MN, Ken Hines of Chicago, IL, Dan Hines and wife Becky of Chicago, IL; two granddaughters, Kathy Jannick and husband John of Plainfield, IL, Karen Larson and husband Bob of Elmwood Park, IL; nine great grandchildren, Alex, Meredith and Lauren Hermeling, Sam and Joe Hines, Valerie and Kristen Larsen, and Katie and Paige Hines; and a nephew, Edwin Berry and wife Linda of Quincy, IL. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Donald Huner. Services: Monday, September 22, 2008, at 10:30 am in Hansen-Spear Funeral Home, with the Rev. Ivan Greuter officiating. Burial will be in Quincy Memorial Park. Visitation: Sunday, September 21, 2008 from 2 to 6 pm at Hansen-Spear. Burial will be in Quincy Memorial Park.
