John I. Spangler Jr., age 89, of 1874 Grove, Quincy, died Friday, February 6, 2015, at 10:24 pm in Blessing Hospital. John was born February 7, 1925 in York, Pennsylvania, the son of John I. , Sr. and Henrietta Helena Wuerthener Spangler. He married Nancy Catherine Quickel on June 12, 1948 in York, PA. She preceded him in death October 30, 1989. In 1945, during the end days of WW II, John served in the United States Army Air Corps where he flew aboard B-29s as a radio navigator in the Pacific Theater. He then earned his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Pennsylvania State University. In 1963 he moved to Quincy, IL and began his career with Gardner-Denver as a mechanical engineer. John later moved into sales and marketing. He was still working in that department when he retired in 1989. John had a life-long passion for singing, but he especially loved barbershop quartets. He joined the Quincy Barber Shop Chorus in the early 1960s, and he was very involved in the group for many years. During his retirement years, John found a real connection with the Quincy Museum. urvivors include his four children: Judy Spangler Trent of Quincy, IL, formerly of Boulder, CO, Barbara (James G.) Stilling of Saint Charles, IL, John I. III (Lita) Spangler of Atlanta, GA, and Scott (Ann) Spangler of Elk Grove Village, IL; eight grandchildren, Ryan (Christopher) Marren, Blair Stilling, Jennifer (Jesse) Bland, John I. Spangler, IV, Eric M. Spangler, Andrew, Joey and Nicolette Spangler; three great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, John was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers, Richard and Donald Spangler. Graveside Services: Thursday (February 12, 2015) at 2:30 p.m. in Greenmount Cemetery with Rev. Gayle Pope officiating. Visitation: Thursday (February 12, 2015) from Noon until 2 p.m. at the Hansen-Spear Funeral Home.
