Dr. Richard Meyer

Dr. Richard Elmer "Dick" Meyer, 93, of Romeoville, IL, and formerly of Quincy, IL, passed away on Thursday, December 20, 2018, in Naperville, IL. Dick was born July 21, 1925, in Quincy, Illinois, the oldest of two children to Elmer Herman and Mary Ellen Loder Meyer. On September 24, 1949, he married Marian Rasmussen in Milwaukee, WI. They met at St. Luke's Hospital in Chicago, where she was the department head for Occupational Therapy, and Dick was doing a medical clerkship with Northwestern Medical School. They were married for 61 years. She preceded him in death on May 27, 2011. He was a graduate of Quincy High School, and Muhlenberg College in Allentown, PA, for his pre-medical education. He later graduated from Northwestern University Medical School, and the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, where he served his residency in Ophthalmology. Dr. Meyer served in the United States Navy during WWII and the Korean War as a Lieutenant in the Medical Corps. ogy, Illinois Association of Ophthalmology (where he served as Treasurer), Adams County Medical Society (where he served as president), Illinois State Medical Society, American Medical Association, Board of Directors of Good Samaritan Home, Salem Evangelical United Church of Christ (where he served on the council), First Union Congregational Church, Golden K Kiwanis Club (where he served on the Board of Directors), Quincy Y.M.C.A. (where he served on the Board of Directors), and the Quincy Country Club. Dr. Meyer is survived by five children: Judith Crowther; Richard Bruce Meyer (Margaret); Karen Christie (Carl); Dr. Roger Meyer (Mary Jo); and Jeffrey Meyer (Janet). He is also survived by 10 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren, and a nephew and numerous nieces. In addition to his wife, Marian, Dr. Meyer was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister, Carolyn Long. Dick's family is grateful for the tender loving care administered by the staffs at Senior Star, The Springs at Monarch Landing, and Angels Grace Hospice. A memorial service will be held 11:00 a.m., Saturday, January 12, 2019 at First United Methodist Church (1032 Maple Avenue, Downers Grove, Illinois) A private graveside service will be held at a later date at Quincy Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, Memorials can be made to Quincy Public Schools Foundation, Alzheimer's Association, Parkinson Research Foundation, American Cancer Society, or Angels Grace Hospice. Hansen-Spear Funeral Directors are in charge of the arrangements.
