Lawrence Wehrs

Lawrence J. Wehrs, 100, of Rochester, MN died March 31, 2019 at Samaritan Bethany. Lawrence John Wehrs was born on September 9, 1918 to John and Mathilda (Prescher) Wehrs. He attended Trinity Lutheran School, Elgin, and graduated from Elgin High School in 1935. He then worked as a bookkeeper and a cashier at the Elgin State Bank until March 1941 when he went to California for employment with Bank of America. During World War II, Lawrence served in the Third US Army Headquarters in Europe under General George Patton. He received the Europe-Africa-Middle East Campaign Medal with Four Battle Stars and was also awarded a Bronze Star which was pinned on him by General Patton himself in February 1945. Having attained the rank of Staff Sergeant, he was honorably discharged in the fall of 1945. He was hired by Northwest Airlines where he worked as a Transportation Agent Supervisor until October 1983 when he retired. He married Lucille Cordes on January 12, 1944 at Trinity Lutheran Church where he has been an active member, having served as deacon, financial secretary, usher, on the stewardship committee and Trinity Lutheran School Board of Education. by Lucille, his wife of nearly 75 years, and his father, mother and step-father, John Siem. He is survived by his two daughters, Jacqueline (John) Walther and Judith (Richard) Argue; four grandchildren, Steven Walther, Timothy Walther, Michelle Swiglo, and David Argue; six great-grand-children; and his sister Loretta Rahman. A funeral service is planned for Thursday, April 4, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be at Grandview Memorial Gardens. Memorials preferred to Rochester Central Lutheran School (Angel Fund), Trinity Lutheran Church or donor's choice.
